Frequently asked questions

What is the Life in the UK Test?

+

It is the Home Office civics test for settlement and citizenship: 24 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes, pass mark 18/24 (75%), £50, with unlimited retakes. The official test is set from the handbook Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents; PrepaUK’s questions cover the same topics without reproducing it.

Which English test do I need?

+

For settlement or naturalisation you must prove your English with an approved SELT (Secure English Language Test) in speaking & listening. The level is CEFR B1 today, rising to B2 for settlement applications made on or after 26 March 2027; naturalisation currently stays at B1. Approved certifiers include Trinity GESE, IELTS Life Skills, LanguageCert SELT and PTE Home.

What is the KoLL requirement?

+

KoLL stands for Knowledge of Language and Life in the UK. To settle or naturalise you generally need to meet both parts: pass the Life in the UK Test and meet the English language requirement.

Do I have to take both tests?

+

Most applicants aged 18–64 need both, but there are exemptions (for example on grounds of age or a long-term condition, and some nationals of majority-English-speaking countries are exempt from the English test). Always check your own case on gov.uk — PrepaUK is a study aid, not immigration advice.

How does scoring work in the app?

+

The Life in the UK mode is marked out of 24 (pass 18); the English mode gives an indicative CEFR speaking & listening estimate. These are estimates to guide your revision — only your official test result is authoritative.

Are the questions and audio official?

+

No. All questions, scenarios and audio are original, written by our team in the exam formats. We do not reproduce the Home Office handbook or any real exam questions. Audio is generated with synthetic British-English (en-GB) voices.

How do mock exams work?

+

The app offers full timed papers in the Life in the UK format and English listening mocks. At the end you get an estimated score and an indicative verdict, so you know if you are on track.

What is smart review?

+

An adaptive algorithm selects questions by prioritising your weak spots: topics you master less well, skill (audio vs text) and items reviewed a long time ago (spaced repetition).

Does the app work offline?

+

Yes: after first launch, all questions, audio and vocabulary flashcards are available offline. A connection is only needed for syncing and content updates. No adverts are shown.

Is this an official app?

+

No, PrepaUK is an unofficial study aid. It is not affiliated with the Home Office, UK Visas & Immigration, Trinity College London, IELTS, LanguageCert or Pearson.

Is my data safe?

+

Your progress is stored locally on your device and synced anonymously via Firebase. We do not collect any personally identifiable data, and no advertising is shown.
